Overview
Planning and development of Fastweb's internal IT portal on a microservice architecture.
Problem
An enterprise telecom environment: many integrated systems, event-driven flows and structured release processes. New features had to ship without destabilising services already in use.
My role
Java developer on assignment: planning and development of microservices within the client's teams and processes.
Challenges
- Split features into independently deployable services.
- Integrate asynchronously through Kafka events.
- Work within established enterprise processes and release windows.
Solution
Spring Boot services with REST interfaces, and Apache Kafka for event-driven integration between components.
Architecture & approach
- Java / Spring Boot microservices.
- Apache Kafka for asynchronous, event-driven communication.
- Enterprise release process with planned deployment windows.
Technology
Outcome
Contributed to the planning and delivery of the portal inside the client's enterprise process.
Lessons learned
- Service boundaries are organisational decisions as much as technical ones.
- Asynchronous integration needs explicit contracts and good observability.
